Also, I witnessed some good players using the "you crouch I stand on your head" thing to get up to higher places I never thought possible. Very clever.

You had an autosniper, and I had a nighthawk, yet I STILL managed to get right beside you and shoot you in the head.
I may/may not have jumped a lot along the way.
It's such a wonderful feeling.
Basically, duck when you start shooting, always remember to keep moving (especially whilst firing, you'll soon get the hang of it) and let your idiot team mates run in first. You'd be amazed at how many people you can catch reloading after they've just put a magazine into your mate.
As for my preferences, I usually equip the following, given my budget:
Primary - Bullpup/M4 (CT), Krieg (T)
Secondary - Nighthawk Deagle
HE
Flash
Kevlar & Helmet
That's usually all I need to pwn. If I'm on a good run and start feeling adventurous, I'll buy a Schmidt Scout as it's more satisfying getting a kill with them than an AWP.
I'll sometimes buy a C90 SMG if I'm low on cash, they have a hell of a rate of fire, and with good aim, can rip through an enemy in no time.
Little tip - From respawn, run with your pistol out, BUT, roll your mouse wheel over your Primary, ready to click it when you get to the firefight. This gives you the speed you need, but also prepares you to pull your Rifle out a little quicker.
