You should clearly be listening to this man.
The fact that it's .avi isn't really important, it's the codec than it was encoded with.

Then it should play.

None of my stuff can play .avis, becasue they are all gay. I have:

Windows Media Player
Winamp
Realplayer
Quicktime

Stupid things.

Pretty much everything plays .avi.
And just search google for a video converter.

Finally, someone that knows something.

How do I get the settings right?

Windows Media plays AVI's if you've got the settings right.
