These are all brilliant books, some novels and some on real life accounts... mainly the World War 1 and 2 books, and H.G.Wells "War of the Worlds" was espically good, made me laugh when I found out that the Americans actually believed that Aliens were invading when this novel was being read out over the Radio...! Stupidity of them

Definately the Eddings books. His Elenium and Tamuli weren't half bad either, as was his standalone, 'The Redemption of Althalus'.
Not to my taste.
Another good book:
To Kill A Mockingbird
Slaughter House 5 - Vonnegut
The Sirens of Titan - Vonnegut
A Song of Ice and Fire trilogy - Martin
Catch 22 - Heller
Winter Warriors - Gemmell
Billy Bathgate - Doctorow
Last Human - Grant (or was it Naylor? I forget)
Catcher in the Rye - Salinger
Vurt - Jeff Noon
1984 - George Orwell
Catch-22 - Joseph Heller
Slaughterhouse 5 - Kurt Vonnegut
High Fidelity, Fever Pitch and About a Boy by Nick Hornby
Emily Bronte's: Wuthering Heights
James Fenimoore Cooper's: Last of the mohicans
Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte
The Wasp Factory - Iain Banks
Emma - Jane Austin
Brave New World - Aldous Huxley

Read these out of the ones mentioned so far and would recommend them all.
To these I'd add A Prayer For Owen Meany - John Irving, for the sci-fi fans Neuromancer and Idoru by William Gibson and for the Gen-Xers Microserfs by Douglas Coupland.
