Or does anyone know how much the monthly subscription fees are?

Good. I'm glad it's not one of these "kill 1000 enemies to get to LVL 2" jobs. Cheers.

4 hours: 3 hours and 58 minutes getting used to the controls, finding my first mission, equipping and getting to know Bostok, then 2 minutes killing DingBats in the Bostok Mines.

Well mine says $6 a month plus $2 for whatever character you want the an extra $1 for every extra character you want!

Looks OK, here are the specs from the box itself:
System Requirements
Minimum System: Operating System: Windows 98/98 SE/ME/2000/XP, CPU: Intel Pentium III 800 MHz or higher, Memory: 128 MB RAM, Hard Drive Space: 7.5 GB of free hard drive spce, Sound Card: DirectX 8.1 compatible sound card, Other: CD-ROM drive (required only at installation), keyboard, mouse, Internet Connection: 56k or faster Internet connection, Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce series or ATI RADEON 9000 series graphics card with 32 MB VRAM (AGP).
Recommended System: Operating System: Windows XP, CPU: Intel Pentium 4 processor, Memory: 256 MB RAM, Hard Drive Space: 7.5 GB free hard drive space, Sound Card: DirectX 8.1 compatible sound card, Other: CD-ROM Drive (required only at installation), keyboard with numeric pad & mouse with scroll wheel, Internet Connection: Always-on Internet connection, Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce3, GeForce4 TI, GeForceFX 5600 or greater graphics card with 64 MB of VRAM (AGP).
Thing is will it run?
I have....
an intel celeron 2.8ghz
190mb ram (weird considering 256mb is plugged in)
Direct x 9
radeon AGP 345M 64mb i think
40 gig hard drive and windows xp...oh and a DVD drive, and a 750k broadband connection...
Think it'll be ok?
In short, good. For anyone who has never played an MMORPG before, get this one. Make sure your PC meets the specs (a PIII 800MHz is just about scraping it) and be prepared for 7 discs and 5-7 hours of installation, registering and updating before you get into the game. The wait is worth it.
FAQs
Q: Do you have to group with others or can you solo?
A: You can solo, but it's tough. You'll die alot, but on the plus side you'll develop your passive fighting skills quicker too, making the next time you go out to kill the last monster that killed you a little easier.
Q: Is one character enough?
A: Yup, definitely. You start out with a choice of 6 jobs to choose from, so if you start as a warrior and get to level 5 and fancy a change, just change your job to a white mage or something. If you decide to change back none of that progress as a warrior has been lost, so in theory you can become high level in all jobs (as long as you've got a decade or so spare). There are more jobs to choose from after certain levels are attained and certain quests are completed. The only reason to get another character is to try out a different race.
Q: Is there much to do?
A: More than any other MMORPG out there. It'll kinda blow you away at first, it's like that time you discover the airship in FFX and realise there's a hell of a lot more to do in the game than you first thought. Here's a taster:
Missions (given by gate guards to improve your standing with your country)
Quests (given by people in cities to improve your standing with them, there are 1000s of quests)
Synthesis (join any of several guilds and craft items like potions, rings, swords you name it, millions of recipies to find)
Skills (as you use a weapon, say a sword, your swordmanship skill goes up and you get new skills every few swordmanship levels, same goes for staffs, clubs, two-handed swords, knives etc. You can specialise or try and get them all)
Fishing (staple requirement of any good MMORPG these days)
Mining (as above)
Auctions (if you fancy your chances as a trader, this is where you can do it, buy low sell high etc)
Ballista (players from opposing countries can play this mini-game)
Chocobos (you can rent these and ride them between areas, the areas are 'huge' by the way. If you've got the money you can travel by airship too).
Q: Is there a storyline?
A: Yes. Some quests you complete seem to give you an insight into the workings and political machinations of the city around you. How this will develop later on I haven't a clue as I've only done about 10 so far.
Q: How many people play it?
A: 1000s on each server. To give you some idea, I did a search of one area that I was in and it brought up 120 names. There are 100s of areas.
Q: Any FF characters in it from the other games?
A: Yup. If you start as a Hume in Bastok you'll run into Cid on your 2nd Mission. Haven't met any others yet but gimme a break I'm only level 7 :)
Q: Can I join a specific server?
A: Yes. Either create and delete characters until you arrive on the server you want, or get someone on your choice of server to send you a worldpass code and then type that in after you name your character, you'll start there.
Overall: Nicer to look at than Lineage II, lots more to do than any other MMORPG I've ever played, excellent support system and interface. I've found my new home for the next few years. If there's one downside it's that there too much to do in the game from the outset. Normally in FF RPGs new concepts are introduced gradually with easy help screens to guide you along, FF XI throws it all at you at once and you're constantly wondering what to do next. I got around this by just running outside and killing lots of stuff until I decided what I wanted to do next :)
Defining Features
Really nice touch this, but when you speak to some NPCs (e.g. for quests) you get a cut scene that adds more story and background to what you're doing.
Final Fantasy touches - you'll feel at home with your HP pots, MP pots, Heals, Chocobo feathers and other familiar items/spells/skills from the FF series.
Quality - this has got to be said, in most MMORPGs there are usually a couple of exploits that everyone abuses (e.g for unlimited gold to unbalance the economy), I've yet to see any in this one. Yet to see any lag, disconnections, glitches, major bugs etc either that all too often are present in other MMORPGs. So pretty cool.
