How much can you spend before import duties get whacked onto the price of importing a DVD?

I'm trying to work out whether it's worth buying the Aladdin gift set from Amazon.com (£23ish with postage) or PlayUSA.com (£25.99, but I've been taxed on £22.99 so theres a high risk of paying again)

I bet it's pot luck isn't it?

It's the normal 3 endings.

I think CD-WOW! say that the value of the product being imported must be of at least £18 before import tax may - or may not - be added.

After that, though, yes, it is pretty much "pot luck".

I've ordered several things over the £18-mark, and have never had to pay an extra even once. Does this just mean I'm lucky? Fortunate that my package was suspicious-looking enough to be investigated?

I bought Malcolm in The Middle Season 1 Box Set from PlayUsa and ended up paying another 7 pounds even though the DVD was only 20 pounds.

Another time I bought Clue on DVD from Canada and there was no charge.

Conclusion: It is just luck.

Hell yeah I need the super duper version!
I've got the super duper Lion King DVD too, though I did pay 3times more than the RRP because I bought it when supplies where non-existant and eBay was my only option....Actually, I do happen to have a spare if you're interested.....

It's pretty much pot luck, they tax some... not others.

Depends what mood they're in to be fair.

That's what I do - ask them to mark it down. Works every time.

I think I heard somewhere that anything commercial over £18 in value will be subjected to Customs charges - unless it's marked as a gift.

I may be wrong though, but that's what I've based my knowledge on.

I know when importing games that if you ask them to mark it down then it is unlikely to get taxed.

Illegal but hey I know many companies are willing to do it.

Hmm doesnt come out for a few weeks, they only put the value of the item inside the packaging on the customs thing right? It's only $32.49 which is about £18.12. I would say risk it with Amazon (bearing in mind the size of it and the fact it'll have Amazon written all over it might attract attention), they seem to be cheapest apart from this Canadian site that are selling the exact same item but for $39.98CAN about £17.18, not really worth it, just goes to show how bad the US$ is now, well not for people buying stuff there, I'd imagine you could get save a bundle.

But in the end, do you really need this super duper Aladdin DVD? I'm guessing that's a yes, can you order me one too, I'll watch it then sell it for double on ebay. One of my favourite Disneys, though I did enjoy Hercules. Hmm where'd did it all go wrong. *shakes head*

I spent £375 on a graphics card from Hong Kong with no import tax and also £255 on a digitial camera from states which I am currently awaiting delivery on but am assured no tax will be added.

I also order a hell of a lot of game from California and Canada and have got away with it everytime.
