That property site I was making (http://www.rc-fp.com), the bloke seems to have taken up some common sense and is using much smaller images. Is that more acceptable? Obviously the smaller the better, but the GD isn't up to scratch on the servers that I'm using, so I can't output smaller gif's, jpg's, or png's, meaning some middle ground has to be found when using the main picture as a thumb.

I'd settle as it is. The file sizes are fine to let you get away with it, just! I'd write a pre loader for them at least though. or at least reduce you tables but using
's and css to up the load time. The more code/styling you can pull out of that page the better it'll load with those images. And at least with CSS you could get the content in the beofre anything else giving the user time to scan the content whilst you pics are loading.

Pages with tables take ages to load as the page won't render until the final , add this to the images loading, this drops your load times before any content arrives.

You could recreate that page using just 5

I don't care if my name isn't Tyla, 55kb for a thumbnail still seems too big if you ask me. That page is at least 250kb in size, thumbnails like that can easily be 7kb with the same quality.

I sound all angry there, woooo.

Why can't he create thumbnails again? And have you emailed the server owners asking for GD to be updated?
