now.... these RAM buggers.

Heres my set-up

Fufitsu Siemens SCALO T
Pentium 4 3.4 HT
250 GIG HD
DVD writer
Mutlticard reader
512 little RAM buggers
ATI X800 256 AGP card (updated from 9600)

It plays half life 2 ok, not on specatcular settings, but not bad..
I dont know what type of RAM my computer uses, and it's not documented on my manual.

but does RAM make that much of a difference? would an extra gig make it play games that much better??!

thanks!

Half Life 2 should run more than "ok" on that setup as it is, surely.

more RAM would help, but to be honest I don't think you should be having any problems in 1280x1024 on High Detail settings.

What frame rate are you getting and in what resolution and with what detail settings now?

That's possibly the most badly phrased question I've ever asked.

It came with a 17in TFT
so resolutions 1280x960.

It does about a steady 40, maybe a little less in action scenes, setting off a big explosion kind of lags for a split second as it thinks though all the physics.

some of it's on high, I let it default my computer, tweeking it any more just seems to bring the FPS down again.

IMO it sounds like something is amiss.

I play with everything set to high (no AA, AF) in 1024x768 and I've never seen the framerate go as low as 40.

I only have an Athlon XP3200+ (effectively, anyway), 512mb and a Radeon 9700 Pro.

I think i'll take it into a computer shop, and get it a 'service'

I'm always having problems with my computer not being up to scratch!

Half Life 2 needs 1Gb RAM to run in High video settings.

It can only run in medium with 512Mb.

I know because I got 512Mb for Christmas and could only play HL2 in medium settings, until I got another 512Mb RAM the next week.

Yes, it works, but not fine. It will need to page the HDD. Half Life 2 will report that the optimum setings for your system are medium, and upgading to 1Gb RAM will make HL2 report High as the optimum for the system

Doom 3 benefits masively from 1Gb RAM also, doesn't have to load info from the HDD after you walk through every other door.
