It is a Compaq Armada M700 laptop with the following:
Windows 98
Memory 192.0 MB of RAM
Memory 5.58 GB
CD compartment
Leads for use of the mains aswell as a battery
Comes with its own carry case
IS that ok?
Has to be slow, HAS to be.

This is such a popular misconception

Correct, except as cjh says you need the cable in order to connect. If your landlord doesn't have a spare cable, and I suspect he will, PC World or any half-decent computer shop will stock one. Your landlord will probably be able to tell you exactly where to go and exactly what to ask for if he hasn't got a cable himself.

Personally I would, but I use my computer all the time. The more you use your computer, the more benefit you'd get out of a better version of Windows. Windows 98 will be able to do all the things you want it to though, it just won't be as smooth or pleasureable an experience as either 2000 or XP.

Yeah, you can get a cable from PC world or any local computer / electronics store. Though you'll need the cable in order to connect it to the router.
Though as its Windows 98, you may need to make a few changes yourself to get it working, but I would have thought the others in the hosue could help you out there.
When i'm at my new house i'll come to you when anything goes wrong!!! Not that it would

Would I be able to up grade windows 98 or will that be more hassle than it's worth?

Nay. A local area network like what your landlord probably has does not run on the phone system, the phone system is only used (sometimes) as the medium by which computers in your house collectively communicate with the outside world. Your landlord will presumably have a network set up so that all the computers in his house plug into a router (or a computer set up to act like a router) using cat5 network cable between each machine and the router. That router will in some way connect to (or possibly include within itself) a modem, which uses either an ADSL or cable connection to connect to the internet.
All you need to do to include yourself in this setup is establish a connection between your laptop and the router, by running a piece of cat5 cable between the network socket on your laptop and a free network socket on the router. This means you need a cat5 cable, but don't buy one, as your landlord may well already have one ready. You may also need to do a bit of twiddling with Windows so that it is set up to talk to the router, but this is pretty easy and your landlord will be able to help. You will probably need the Windows 98 CD to do this though, so make sure you take it with you to the new house.

Yeah he has. There are 3 other people in the house already and they use the internet, so do i just connect my laptop into the phone socket?
I can't believe how dumb i'm sounding!!!

Well as i said my bro and bro in law deals with stuff like that.
I was thinking today about hooking the sound up to my cd player, which isn't very good actually, it has radio and a cd player so what else could i want??
My best mate does this with his pc and stereo but what does my cd player need to have in order to do this? Is it just a matter of connecting the sound to the sockets the speakers are plaugged into?
