Erm. It has a well-drawn map for each of the four regions that you wander through. It only takes about a minute to walk from one side of a region to another.

Look at some screenshots to get a better idea.

my interest has been dramatically raised. Does it have the old world map with dots on that you move inbetween?

You move in squares yes.

Does it have the chess like grid battle system?
