Yup not funny, but to spend so much time, effort and money just for it to all go wrong on the final hurdle...well, what else can you do? Other than cry and have a nervous breakdown, which I'm sure at least one NASA dude is having right now.
I saw this live on the news! Not really that funny, because the money could have been used for something that would benefit the Human race - like food and medicine for starving countries, and that sort of thing. I know I sit here eating Mullerice and not really doing my part, but I haven't got 264 million dollars at my disposal to measure if our Sun is hot or not, or what they were up to squillions of years ago.
I know, I know, it's business, economy, etc. - but it's ultimately useless, like motor-racing. Nice to know these things, but shouldn't we address the problems elsewhere on our own planet instead of keeping a couple of eggheads intellectually satisfied for a week or so? I can imagine the scene now, when they spend another $264m and get it right:
"Eric, our calculations were correct, the Sun *is* hotter than the +1 enchanted flame attack in Hero Quest!"
"Nigel, crack open the Babycham and the 12-sided party dice"
