Thank GOD for people who do things like this (and don't try and do it all yourself even when there's far too many people willing to help, note to self).
Basically, to anyone who'd rather not click and let me explain, it's as so.
Two people (or if you're suicidal, one) get a rather old car, no more than 1,000 cc engine, and then take part in a giant race from London to Mongolia, covering 1/4 of of the distance around the planet, 10,000 miles, 2 deserts, 5 mountain ranges, and not all that many roads. The whole idea is to try and make it.
But why? Well apart from being what should surely be a fantastic experience, the £1000 entrance money will be given to charity, and the costs of running the event.
So basically, it's an old banger cannonball run for charity. Everybody wins.
It's now the purpose of my year to get as much sponsorship and money to get the car and bits we need, and take part in this in 2005.
If you're interested, there's a heapload of information on the site, and it's run by incredibly friendly people with a hell of a sense of humour. Driving a quarter of the way around the world is a hell of a dream to take part in, and it's all for charity too. Beats any festival for the summer, without a doubt.
Now all I need is a mask...

2 deserts in a clapped out car? Sounds like death to me.
I'd be quite interested to follow your progress.
Make a website or something.
It wasn't a "cannonball" type car race though, but it was a race from England -> Africa I think, in classic cars. One of the cars that I saw pulled into Silverstone for a bit to get some publicity for his journey. It was an MG B class (came around in the 1960's or so) and it's engine purred like a finely tuned feline.
Go for it Grix, and go to Silverstone whilst your at it, it's an amazing track to see before you hit on your journey :-)
ha ha ha
