I would suggest Azumanga, it's very funny and popular among fans. For some reason the first volume has a 12 rating. Yet I have no idea why. Another good series is Full Metal Panic. Was so good my brother got me to order him vol 2 and 3 while they're still on special offer for £8.99

'Manga Entertainments' were the main distributor of animes in the 90ies hence why some people refer to it incorrectly as "manga". Though not so much these days.
GitS is a good anime, but since it's release almost a decade ago, many hundreds of new animes have come out. Try anime other than Akira, GitS and Ninja Scroll.
