I have expressed interest towards this company as they seem pretty good. No contract, low prices, no bandwidth limits or time limits...

Anyone know if they're that good?

Here's a reply they sent me:

Good morning Rob,

Thank you for making an enquiry with VoiceNet, sorry we didn't reply earlier, we have been waiting for a reply from our support dept.

I can confirm that our ADSL service supports online gaming.

All our ADSL packages come with a dynamic IP address, if you do want a static IP address there is a monthly charge of £6.99 including VAT.

Our 512K ADSL service is £21.99 and the 1Mb service is £31.99

There are no download limits nor do we have an time limits of any sort.

All prices include VAT, there is no contract so you can cancel with one months notice.

I think i've covered everything, if you need further assistance, please email back or contact us FREE on 0800 4965566 (we also provide FREE support)

All the best and have a great weekend.

Best Regards

The only thing is, you have to pay the £65 connection fee (unless you buy their 'starter pack' for £89.99). But apart from that, they seem great.

Anyone know of any reason not to bother with them?

Cheers. As it stands, it looks like Pipex are the new favourite again.

They're well known, 4th best (still true?) and pretty affordable. Voicenet aren't even listed on ADSLGuide.org so I can't see how well they perform.

£58.75 isn't much anyway, so that's a bonus.

Pipex are decent as I am with them. PlusNet are cheaper for 1Mb and 512K and they also offer unlimited 2Mb for £39.99. If you knew you were staying for 12 months at least then PlusNet might work out pretty well. Actually thinking of it the initial cost of PlusNet is pretty high compared to Pipex so the £4 cheaper a month for 1Mb is pretty much lost as you need to get yourself a modem or a router which PlusNet do sell, and pay PlusNet the activation is £70.50 for a monthly contract or £58.75 for 12 months. So in 12 months you can save £48 in monthly charges with PlusNet over Pipex. But if you take in to account the activation fee and then modems and routers from PlusNet ranging from £34.99 to £59.99 that £48 you save in 12 months is eaten up by the activation fee and the modem. Take you 2 years at the current prices of PlusNet and Pipex to pay out the same.

Also I dont know what filters you get with PlusNet as there is no mention of them. Pipex say they supply free micro filters, as they say filters I am assuming more than 1. Now filters arent too expensive but a decent one is £5-15 so if you need 2 filters and Pipex supply 2 filters then your set. If PlusNet provide no filters then more money is needed to get some filters.

2Mb from PlusNet is good value and if your looking for 2Mb then PlusNet are the way to go.

Thanks very much for that, Adrian. OK, so it seems Pipex are the new favourite for my situation.

I'll read up on their site again and make a decision when I'm settled into my new place :)

Thanks again

Well with Pipex they paid the activation charge for you and in return expect 12 months. If you leave within 12 months they ask you to pay the activation fee of £58.75 and thats it, no remaining months etc like some ISPs would do. Pipex at the moment is FREE setup, FREE modem. You pay £33.99 a month unlimited 1Mb and then the £58.75 fee applys if you leave within 12 months.

PlusNet look like they can be expensive in setting up. You can buy a modem or router from them and then the activation charge is different. £58.75 for a annual contract and £70.50 for a monthly one.

Now BT charge the ISP £58.75 to connect you, thats why Pipex ask for this if you leave within 12 months as they are paying for something that is actually a charge that the user should pay. Now PlusNet seems to make money from the activation for the monthly contract as it charges more for the setup.

PlusNet are cheaper monthly than Pipex and Voicenet, but these charges are too high. With Pipex you could go get a FREE modem, FREE setup, pay your monthly charge and then if you do cancel within 12 months pay the £58.75 that most ISPs ask for in advance. If you dont cancel within 12 months then you dont pay this fee at all even if you cancel at a later date.

Cancellation fees are usually the total sum of the remaining Months, are they not?

I'm going by experience of Mobile Phone contracts here, so if the fee is actually quite low, I'd be surprised - and would probably decide on Plusnet

Yes, but surely the cancellation fee is smaller than that set-up fee anyway?

As good as Plusnet are, I'm ideally looking for a provider that doesn't tie you down with a Contract. I'm (hopefully) moving into a new place in the coming weeks and since it's my first place of my own, who knows if I'll have any problems.

At least with no contract, if I'm forced to move out and back in with the Parents, there's no crippling cancellation fee - just a Month's notice.
