I thought it was only supposed to be google employees beta testing it and long time and active bloggers that got all these invites.

Where the hell did all you get all these accounts so you can invite people on forums?

Presumably it's happened in some sort of Pyramid effect, those bloggers and employess got them, gave them to their friends, who gave them to their friends etc etc. They'd spread in no-time. Every-now and then, Google gives Gmail account users some more invites to give to their friends, and therefore the number of Users continues to increase...
