I go away for a few days and come back to find my settings for XP have been changed so that it won't boot up into the XP desktop. :S

How do I:

make a new settings file without being in XP?

or

reset my computer/settings to their defaults so I can get into XP?

Not automatic, it sort of 'recommends' I update.

And f8 still doesn't work whilst windows is booting up. :S

Right, try F5, F6, F8, F12. One of them should work. Actually, try them all.

Like I said: f8 does nothing.

He'd make a fine IT consultant.

Press F8 when is says Starting Windows... this will give you a menu, Safe Mode being one of them. This is a Windows thing and not your BIOS.

Re. The cause of your problems - do you have Automatic Windows Updates enabled by any chance ?

Delete for BIOS.

F8 for safe mode.

Two different things.

Pretty sure it is f8, looked it up.

My BIOS doesn't give me the option though. :S

Might have to get a new BIOS.

Enter setup to see if it says there. Failing that, try all the F keys. Trial and error and all that. My PC' is F8
