I just got a letter from United Press asking my permission (MY PERMISSION) to publish a poem in a collection called Still Life. The poem? It seems to be everyones favourite - An Inner Monologue Of A Teddybear, which goes..

I sit, angle poised, my beady eyes see all
Sulking in dust and waiting for my time to come
The gift that lived for a day before being abandoned on a high shelf
Never to be played with again

Devoid of love, my stitching intact
But I yearn to be battered and bruised though overuse
My stuffing doesn’t spill out at the seams as it rightfully should
It sits neatly inside me

My flimsily stitched limbs, attached
Not amiably dangling off, dog eared and sick stained
I’m not the comfort tool I wish to be, but a decorative prop
In the play known as life

Gift tag still sewn and neat
My fur is thick, not healthily worn away
I bear no scars nor marks of amusement that I beg for
I sit here, angle poised

--- Apparently the poem made it to the final selection stages to appear in the national anthology (which would have got me a financial reward) but just didnt make it sadly. There are only 100 poems in the final anthology and there were something like 10,000 entries - so I didnt do too badly I dont think.

The book called Still Life is availible in October and will be availible from large bookstores or online at unitedpress.co.uk.

Also my poem Politics was published in an anthology this month by ForwardPress - I've forgotten the anthology name, though.

Yes, this is a scam; I read this ages ago on a site called Freelancers Database. The Scam page can be found here; http://www.freelancewritersdatabase.co.uk/articlesresult.php?title=Common%20writing%20scams

"A poetry competition is organized, often with a strict word limit. Everyone who responds gets a glowing letter of praise inviting them to be included in a forthcoming anthology. This anthology will be of very poor quality, crammed with as many poems as possible, and it won't be sold in any reputable bookshops. The aim of the scammers will be to sell it to the poets whose work appears inside, usually at a highly inflated price. There will be no payment, and certainly no royalties."

Then It goes onto say that they will publish your poem if you buy the book - and most feel obliged to buy it - because it has your poem in.

"This scam works because those who fall for it will often be so happy about getting published that they will buy several copies to send to their friends or relatives. Often those people who decide not to place an order will have their entries removed from the anthology. If in doubt, don't part with any cash."

If you want to read it all click the link above, and look at the poem scam. Its a damn shame.

Well, I'll see if my crappy short story gets published, then - the deadline for my 'payment' is September 3rd

Nice idea for a scam.

Get 200 poems and stuff off the net, charge them all £30 for the published article which is probably worth £5 and will never be in shops.

If you are serious about your Poem writing, you should compiler a book yourself and sell it.
I think what i just wrote sounds easier than what it really is - but its worth a try. The average poem takes 20-30 Mins to write, you write about 50 poems and there you have it a book.
Just say that the first book all the proceeds goto Oxfam or something, then your next book you get all the proceeds.

Heh forward press did try and rip me, but assured me that my poem would be published whether or not I bought the £237 book or not. I opted out.

Heh,
I have had a poem of mine published - it is when you think about it a scam. They make you PAY for the book that it is published in. Still atleast i get to say to the Grand kids that i was once an author.

:D

Do you need to pay £20 publishing costs?

Forward Press - what a fecking scam.

They'll publish anything - They offered to publish a short story of mine that was absolute tat.

They'll easily make money from you, man. You've got to buy, like, £27 worth of books, or some crap. Times that by anopther 29 or so authors, and you've got a major rip-off.

But well done on this one.
