Steve Cram speaking to the BBC about Paula Radcliffe pulling out of the women's marathon this afternoon.

"This is not the way she would have wanted her Olympic challenge to end."

On the contrary. If she thought she could win, then all power to her. However, it's only when she realised she wasn't going to win squat during the race when she decided to sit down and cry. Giving up in the middle of the race is different from not even trying.

Is finishing fourth really that bad?

Mmm... I get annoyed when the Adults used to say we were all winners.

I think winning is definatly all of it.

It's the winning that counts, not the taking part. If you don't win, you'd better have an excuse. That's my motto.

The right attitdue. All the athletes at the olympics, or in any sport, should really believe they can win, other wise they shouldn't be there.

Were you one of those "It's the taking part that counts" type people at school sports days Snuggly?

she's an athlete not a doctor. she may be loaded, doesn't mean she has the intelligence to train out there ;)

I don't buy the weather excuse. She's probably rich, I'm sure she could have afforded to train out there all summer if she had wanted to. And besides, half the people running in the marathon come from countries with lesser climates than Greece, including the winner, who was Japanese.

No, she gave up because it was obvious she wasn't going to win anything. When the 4th place runner overtook her to move into bronze medal position, she practically gave up there and then. So, rather than complete the race and come fourth (an entirely respectable position, considering it's the best athletes competing from around the world), she quit and came DEAD LAST by disqualification. Nice one.

What kind of crappy attitude is that? Giving up because you can't win? Psshh.

Personally I couldn't give a toss how many medals "we" get in the Olympics.

So that's one member of the country she hasn't 'let down'

Think about it, no matter how much training she does, she cant train for the hot and very humid conditions of athens. She did her best, just because she let the whole country down doesn't mean she's a... hang on, yeah she is.
