Ah, active at last, no longer do i fear large images, flash movies or online gaming.

Details of an adslguide speedtest will follow when this download has finished.

Will think about getting 2Mb from PlusNet once my 1Mb deal with Pipex is over £28.95 for 1Mb is good but it might go up to £33.99 in October as thats when my special offer price finishes. I have just finished Uni and have no job yet so cant really get 2Mb even though currently my dad is paying for it. Usually I pay at least half of the years subscription in the summer from my part time job, but this year my dad hasnt said anything and with out a job I couldnt afford to pay.

Could you give me a brief rundown of how to optimise my connection Adrian?

Thanks.

Yeah no probs.

Basically you need to get Dr TCP to change the values. Now theres 2 important values MTU(Maximum Transmission Unit) and RWIN(Recieve Window).

The MTU is the size of the packet to be transmitted excluding the 28 bytes of info. In the past you didnt want the total number to exceed 1500 as BT routers had problems and had to split larger packets up, so 1472 would be the maximum MTU as the extra 28 bytes equals 1500, but now 1500 should work.

The MTU I have for my 1Mb is 1430 as this worked best for 512K and gives good results for 1Mb, dont think I bothered changing it for 1Mb to see if anything was better. Some of the most common MTUs excluding the 28 bytes are 1430, 1458, 1472, 1478 and 1500. Try all of these with their respective RWIN values.

RWIN is basically the amount of data the sender will send before it needs an ack knowledgement(ack). Every packet of data that is sent to you, you reply back with a "yes I got it". If you dont respond then the sender stops sending it until it gets an ack back, so if the RWIN is too small the sender might stop sending before the ack can be sent. No the RWIN shouldnt be too large as it can corrupt packets of data, but too small and you risk capping the speed of the connection which can effect sites in the US and further away.

RWIN is basically the MTU - 40 multiplied by a number. So in my case 512K was 1430 - 40 x 10 = 13900. Perfect RWIN for 512K. 1Mb I use 19 instead of 10 and I get 26410 as this gives me 132K/s at 200ms away which is plenty speed. I did have it at 13900 the same as 512K, but US download sites were slow compared to having the value at 26410.

So with 2Mb you would probably want multiplyer of at least 38. Some good links are http://www.dslreports.com/ go to Tools and select Tweak test. You can see the RWIN, MTU etc. Make sure you select PPPoA when you fill out your speed, also the speed would be 2048.

Another site is http://www.speedguide.net/ on here there is tweak tester(Broadband, Broadband Tools, TCP/IP analyzer) which shows you the estimated download rates for different ping times. Dont use any automatic tweaker from this site as its a US site and will work to US standards.

Hope all this helps. Really its just trial and error. One setting might work best for you while another person down the street has another set of values. A good test site is http://www.ocean.zen.co.uk as they have bigger files to download. ADSL guide is ok, but a larger file will give you a nicer average and show any small hiccups or delays.
