Well just thinking, how do they work, do you need some kind of special server or can you tune it around to work on your pc?

You can never tell how much processing power you need to run dedicated Internet servers. However you may find your connection isn't up to it.

so would i run into loads of problems running an old PC as a server for a few mates to play Wolfenstein on do ya think?

ApacheFriend's XAMPP is the thing to get, everything's already set up...

Even for Windows Apache is a better option as it intigrates with php perl and mysql very well (not to sure about asp)

Yes, it can just be your own PC, or even a disused old one. All you need (if you have XP) is the IIS component, which can be installed through the Add/remove programs link. If you don't have XP, you can download the Apache web server: [URL]http://apache.org/[/URL]

If you wanted to dedicate solely as a web server, bear in mind that strictly speaking ISPs don't allow web servers to run run from a home connection, even if it is broadband. However, most of the time traffic shouldn't be too heavy so it shouldn't be a problem.
