Could somebody help me as i am a bit confused. I wish to put a distribution of Linux on a spare (5GB) HDD and i was wondering what distribution i should use on it.
Considering that all i want it for is to test it out and maybe program a bit of C.
I can get my hands on an old version of RedHat although it is pretty old (Its from my local library). This will be the first time i will be using a Linux OS - so erm.. i need help, as it does not look easy.
How much (MB) would the files be if i were to download them off the internet and install from CD?
Thankyou,
James

Most Linux Distos come with Windows like interfaces, it depends what you are looking for as I found Mandrake a breeze to install and configure where as many do tend to require lots of configuring (but I'm to lazy for that)

I'd go for SuSe as well, although last time I looked they didn't have ISOs to download. There IS a ~30MB CD image you can download and if you can get the internet up and running then you can do a network install. Otherwise you could buy the CDs at a place like thelinuxshop.co.uk for £8, or get the personal edition on the coverdisc of this month's Linux Format.

Well that's rubbish. There's a world of difference between all the distros and choosing the right one could make or break your interest in Linux forever. I chose Mandrake initially, but after the 7th re-install and far too much hassle to remember, I went ahead and installed Debian - which I still use to this day.

Although I can't say Debian is the right distribution for you though, it is very technical. After reading various reviews in magazines over the years however, I would have to recommend SuSE.

It's down to personal choice what distro you download. THe main ones are Fedora Core 2 (Redhat), Mandrake, SuSE and Debian. For a first timer it doesn't matter, though Debian is less beginner friendly if all you want is a straightfoward installation.

Look for the .iso files (usually around 650MB sized) - there are 4 for Fedora plus the rescue CD. Save them onto HD, burn them to disc and boot from the CD.

Oh, and there's nothing wrong with programming in C for Windows.

What would you recommend. From the screenshots it looks a bit too much like Windows.

I'd feel guilty if I watched someone choose Mandrake and just stood idly by.

So all I'm saying is, you're going to regret it. I know I did.
