Could somebody help me as i am a bit confused. I wish to put a distribution of Linux on a spare (5GB) HDD and i was wondering what distribution i should use on it.
Considering that all i want it for is to test it out and maybe program a bit of C.
I can get my hands on an old version of RedHat although it is pretty old (Its from my local library). This will be the first time i will be using a Linux OS - so erm.. i need help, as it does not look easy.
How much (MB) would the files be if i were to download them off the internet and install from CD?
Thankyou,
James

The last time I did that it messed up the drive names and without much thought I pressed enter and waved bye bye to loads of college work.

Depends what distro.

I never dared to do the whole "fdisk and mkfs" thing with Gentoo.

He has a seperate disk..

Anyway, cfdisk will partition it for you at install-time.

You'll need to make 3 partitions as well, I reccomend using something like Partition Magic before you install.

I personally use Gentoo Linux.

It's difficult to set up, you load the CD and you get a commandline. But the handbook is very helpful to follow, and you'll get A LOT of support off the community forums.

You'll come out of the install knowing one heck of a lot of Linux/Unix related stuff and you can crack on with creating the system YOU want it to be.

Well worth the effort, and a brilliant distribution.

Thing is, most of these distros try to install KDE, which is the windows-like interface. However, that's a BAD thing, as Windows just isn't perfect. GNOME is my preferred GUI, because it's just better. Different, in a good way. Surely that's what you want?

Over the years I've become very jaded after many bad experiences with customer services, you have bucked the trend. Polite and efficient from the Freeola team, well done to all involved.
Wonderful...
... and so easy-to-use even for a technophobe like me. I had my website up in a couple of hours. Thank you.
