Why is it illegal to try and kill yourself?
If you try, but fail and/or get talked out of it, you can be arrested.
If you succeed, you can't. For obvious reasons.
> Why talk him out of it?
It depends on why they do it. Some people have money troubles, some have emotional issues. A lot of people that kill themselves could probably have seen counsellors and sorted themselves out. Most of the time it's a cry for help.

It's not.
It is only illegal to attempt to kill yourself.
There was a story in our local paper the other week about a bloke that was talked out of jumping off a building.
Why talk him out of it? If he wants to do it, let him do it. If he's talked out of it he'll only be annoyed. There's obviously a damn good reason (in his mind at least) to make him do it, so let him.
That's what I say anyway.

Ah ok well think of the people who have to clean it up. How much money they on then?

I think rail companies have to clean up the aftermath of such an incident within two hours, otherwise they get fined. Puts the trains back, but I doubt that driver would want to continue his shift (actually, I probably would, the amount of money they get is obscene, and they still want more)!

Plus think of all the mess, it can ruin the train times for up to 48 hours which is a long time. Very selfish.

But what if the Church convinced me that God existed, then I wanted to meet him? The only way to do that is to kill yourself.
On a side-note, I know three people that have had a parent kill themselves. And I don't know that many people, so that's a pretty high percentage. It depends how it's done. Jumping under a train is the most selfish way. It's quick, and painless (unless they get dragged loads, or it just hits an arm or something), but the shock to passengers, and especially the driver can have a lasting effect.
I read the other day that someone opened a door and jumped out of a helicopter on a tourist ride above the Grand Canyon. That's pretty impressive, but dangerous for the rest of the passengers. I'm all up for euthanasia, but I think it would be abused by the mentally ill and their carers.
