Has anyone else received this kind of email before? Or perhaps 8 years ago you were still in Primary School and unlikely to have email.

10 days ago I received an email with the above subject title. At first I thought something was up, it looked like an official Hotmail email but there was no Hotmail icon for it in the inbox and the address it was sent from seemed rather odd and unofficial.

It said;

Dear MSN® Hotmail® Member:

As a valued MSN Hotmail Member, you will receive your storage upgrade automatically in the coming days. Over the month of August we will upgrade the storage capacity of your e-mail account to 250 MB - that's 125 times your current storage limit! We will also increase your attachment size from 1MB to 10MB. This means you will be able to store and attach more than ever and it's free!
--

So I waited and just noticed a few minutes ago that my account has indeed been upgraded to 250MB and I just sent a 6MB file to a friend of mine.

Not sure why they gave me this as I just asked a few people and they are still stuck on 2MB. I have had the email account since 1996 8 years ago so I guess that's as good a reason to give me some sort of a reward. They do have a Hotmail Plus thing costing £14.99 but then that makes my new upgrade look pathetic as you get 2GB space 20MB email size and many other nice features.

So yeah I'm happy, it's free and now I dont have to worry abount deleting 150 junk emails that manage to find their way into my inbox over the course of a few days. That and being able to send large files such as photos, I've been taking lots of new photos lately hopefully I'll get a chance to show them on SR.

mine did too :) actually I'm not sure if I received this email ages ago as well. Because I usually ignore all the MSN emails, hopefully in the next few days your account will either change or they'll send you an email too.

As part of Google's mission to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful, we're testing an email service called Gmail.

Gmail is a free, search-based webmail service that includes 1,000 megabytes (1 gigabyte) of storage. The backbone of Gmail is a powerful Google search engine that quickly recalls any message an account owner has ever sent or received. That means there's no need to file messages in order to find them again.

When Gmail displays an email, it automatically shows all the replies to that email as well, so users can view a message in the context of a conversation. There are no pop-ups or untargeted banner ads in Gmail, which places relevant text ads and links to related web pages adjacent to email messages.

You see to me that sounds all very impressive but i will wait frst see if it works, i like the idea of not having to delete any emails.

I'm sure when I get the chance I will go for G-mail as well. I suppose a lot of people are happy with just 2MB of space. 250MB seems like a lot and despite having lots of emails in my inbox it still says 1% I dont think people really need 1GB or 2GB unless of course they're sending and receiving huge files.

I would use the gmail service as a storage for all my Hotmail email. JUst forward it to my other address then delete it. PLus if anyone needs to send me any large fies i could use the gmail, so i see it as quite useful just got to get my hands on an account.

At the end of that message, as you will probably already know, it says this:

"We will send an update on when and how these exciting changes will be made to your account within two weeks. Please check your email for this important update."

It was over a month a go now and like I said nothing happened, they forgot. :-(

G-Mail sounds good, but MSN's upgrades to Hotmail are boviously there to keep customers away from Google's offerings. But this is adequate for me, but with an invite or possibility to sign up, it's likely I would get G-Mail.

Obviously none of you go on the right sites; on the gamefaqs boards, g-mail's spread around a lot and it is working at the moment. It works by an 'invite-only' system whereby people that have g-mail get given a few invites every now and then and can give an account to anyone they want.

I'm not that bothered about the storage as I only use 3% of my 2MB but the extra attachment size looks good.

Anyway, it is operational now, just not for sign-up.
