The answer is idiocy. The women who run from whatever masked villain never retaliate. For example in valentine one of the women manages to hit the weird masked cherub with a snooker cue. He's down on the floor, stunned momentarily. But then the daft cow keeps on running. Why the hell doesn't she hit him again, and again. Then he'd be dead and she wouldn't end up impaled on some jagged glass. Either american women are very dozy when it comes to survival, or the writers just have no logic. Whatsoever. The same happens in scream when Mr Grim Reaper has had 3 beer bottles thrown at his face. He's on the floor. The chance is their to stomp on his head and push the fridge onto him. BUT NO!!! This silly b!tch decides to try and escape through the cat flap, giving Reaper man an easy method of killing her. Raise the garage! She's pretty much laying it on a plate, saying, 'oh please kill me MANNNN!!!.' Utterly stupid. Here are a few other horror movies which see the dumb teen run off when she has the chance to stop the murderer:
Wrong turn
Halloween
I know what you did last summer
Urban Legend.
To name but a few. Infact the only recent movie I can think of that didnt do this is probably final destination 2. Being that this wasn't a generic slasher flick and the evil murdering thingy wasn't some insecure/nerdy/troubled maniac donning a nice mask. Hockey maybe :D

Michael can't die! At least, I hope he's still alive..

S'what makes - or used to make - a horror movie all good. Dumb people who run around the house instead of outside, or like you mention, batter them to death. They want you to be annoyed! They want you to scream at the screen in excitement, "Out the house you dozy git!". Suspense and stuff.
They're all crap now, though.

It's teen horror, that's what the matter with it is.
A lot of screaming, running, then having sex in a cupboard while their best friend gets eaten by Clichéd Villan #61.

Teen horror movies are aimed at the teen market..(waits for sarcastic comment) however do they listen to what the teens want? Nope. They think people who watch their kinda garbage. are doped up to the eye balls so they wont know whats going on. The story lines are soooo predictable. Total pointless.. however good if drunk.

That's half the point with horror, the people in are stupid - like they go in to the woods or some thing which might have wolves howling in or rattling in the bushes or trees and going into the creaky, old, haunted house.

Also another common one is when you hear some thing in the old, creaky, haunted house they go to turn then light switch instead of their torch (they always have a torch, which normally runs out so that is why the put the light on), but it is obvious some one is gonna grab their hand.

As Tiltawhirl said, it's not about being well written or not, fool.

It's for sheer shock value and gore. Etc.

I just get scared and change channel.

Don't be silly. It was entertaining, but other than the first scene with Drew Barrymore there was little to no tension in the entire film.

I watched scream the other day and I think it still remains the most tense horror film of the last decade.

It's Horror, what do you expect?

It's not about subtle plotlines and character development. It's about shock value, gore and camp humour. I love most horror films, no matter how bad and cheesy they are.

Only thing I can't stand are these stupid 'ironic' Horror films that have surfaced since Scream did well at the boxoffice.

Its the same with all movies, they can't have the first victim lash out, beat the killer as the movie would end. How many times have you seen a film and just thought, why dont they do this, or that etc. Films can't do what we think they should do to end the situation as other wise its a boring film.
