Wrong turn
Halloween
I know what you did last summer
Urban Legend.
To name but a few. Infact the only recent movie I can think of that didnt do this is probably final destination 2. Being that this wasn't a generic slasher flick and the evil murdering thingy wasn't some insecure/nerdy/troubled maniac donning a nice mask. Hockey maybe :D

Michael can't die! At least, I hope he's still alive..
S'what makes - or used to make - a horror movie all good. Dumb people who run around the house instead of outside, or like you mention, batter them to death. They want you to be annoyed! They want you to scream at the screen in excitement, "Out the house you dozy git!". Suspense and stuff.
They're all crap now, though.
A lot of screaming, running, then having sex in a cupboard while their best friend gets eaten by Clichéd Villan #61.

No shiznit, Sherlock.
Also another common one is when you hear some thing in the old, creaky, haunted house they go to turn then light switch instead of their torch (they always have a torch, which normally runs out so that is why the put the light on), but it is obvious some one is gonna grab their hand.
It's for sheer shock value and gore. Etc.
I just get scared and change channel.
*wimple*

It's Horror, what do you expect?
It's not about subtle plotlines and character development. It's about shock value, gore and camp humour. I love most horror films, no matter how bad and cheesy they are.
Only thing I can't stand are these stupid 'ironic' Horror films that have surfaced since Scream did well at the boxoffice.
