Right guys i have done every aspect of PC building like cards, cables installing pretty much everything barr a cpu before, which i have got people to put in for me before.

Now i am thinking of doing it myself. Probably an athlon. how Hard is it to do? is it relatively simple to plug in? its the thermal stuff that concerns me. Is it easy enough to swipe on or is there a high chance of me frying something?

Any tips appreciated! thanks!

Oh well, in my experience I've always used paste - I killed a couple of processors due to not putting any on - and I don't overclock!

As long as you don't intend to overclock it you're fine. I've never used the stuff.

Yeah, well, my guide has pictures. So by default it's the best.

If you want it put more simply than a gazillion pages of text. First, you simply lift the lever up to release the locking mechanism (Very important you remember this). Make sure the processor is the correct way round (You can check this by matching the pins to the holes) and drop it into place. NOTE: The processor should just drop into the socket. DON'T try to force it in. Once it's in, carefully push the lever down to lock the mechanism again. Now perhaps the hardest part is installing the fan on top (Can be very awkward with certain fans and motherboard layout designs). Firstly, make sure the fan is the correct way around. There is a copper plate on the bottom of the fan which should sit directly on the processor where as the strip down the side should sit on the high rised edge of the cpu socket. Now you will need to carefully connect the fan to the CPU socket making sure you don't scratch the CPU, motherboard or anything else. Finally connect the fan to the fan socket and you're sorted.

A bit long, but definitive nonetheless: http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/white_papers_and_tech_docs/23986.pdf

I'd explain it myself but it's been a long time since I did one myself and I may not be totally accurate - but this guide sure looks to be.
