Right guys i have done every aspect of PC building like cards, cables installing pretty much everything barr a cpu before, which i have got people to put in for me before.

Now i am thinking of doing it myself. Probably an athlon. how Hard is it to do? is it relatively simple to plug in? its the thermal stuff that concerns me. Is it easy enough to swipe on or is there a high chance of me frying something?

Any tips appreciated! thanks!

Um it's worth noting that I've come across chips that have been killed by touching the pins before. This is the purpose of anti-static wrist bands. Of course, you can get around needing one of those by always earthing yourself before you do anything and by not touching the pins!

I was sure that its ok to touch the pins if you need to, just dont bend any. Or drop it.

About half a grain of rice is a good starting place, get yourself one of those mobile phone e-top up cards to spread it with. You dont need a lot, you should have enough to just cover the core.

Re chip alignment, all chips have an arrow on one corner which ligned up with an arrow on the socket.

Oh and check the underside of the processor, on one corner there should be one pin missing, just line that missing corner up with the correct corner on the socket and you are sorted.

The hardest part is fitting the fan on

Not using thermal paste is a great way of reducing your processor's lifespan by 99.9% or so.
