Ta.
(just a quick warning you have to pay for OnSpeed)
Apart from 56k, the max speed you should get is 6kb/s but I've only ever got over 5kb for a few seconds...
1 byte = 8 bits
512k maximum downloading speed including overhead is 64kb
likewise, 1MB will translate to 100kb/s.
That is, if both connections are run on a 'perfect' pipe.
Contention Ratio
Equipment (including the modem and the actual machine using it)
Quality of the Line
Quality of the Service Provider
Number of people connected to an exchange (including Cable if lots of people are connected speeds do slow down)
The kind of test (some tests may not be accurate)
If any type of Compression comes into play (especially if you were able to get up to 480k)
Still, those rates are what I've always had here, bearing in mind I'm in a retirement town in rural Essex..

ADSL atm is not over crowded so contention isnt really coming into it. 512K connection should do 60K/s as the therotical maximum is 64K/s(512/8). 1Mb is double that rate. Cable is contended at street level and at times you can get faster than your rated speed as 512K is limited to 64K/s maximum and you said you could get 72K/s. My friend who has cable has said sometimes its abit faster than rated but then at times its slower due to other people in the street. With ADSL I always get maximum speed no matter time of day etc.
Damn crappy adsl contention :p

Of course he was helpful... he was stating the max/usual rates.
If you start talking about contention ratio's etc then of course the speed is going to dip...
