1MB connection (which i have NTL) is usually around 75kb/s but depending on how well the server is, it can go up to 100kb/s and maintian that.
512kb (which i used to have) went to about 35kb/s sometimes reaching 50kb/s

A 512Kilobit connection should be able to sustain a download rate of about 60 Kilobytes. Double that for a 1 Megabit pipe (I presume you don't mean 1 Megabyte, that's inordinately quick for a connection in this country and connections are generally measured in bitrates, not byterates).

FFS.

I so need Broadband.
That sounds nice compared to my rock steady 2/3 and, if I'm lucky, it's a full moon, and there's been a solar eclipse, possibly even 4kbps.

Mr. Miserableman person, you may say all this mumbo jumbo about bits and bytes.
But having once had both connections, i know what speed they go at, and you have to take into consideration the server speed, the ammount of people online on it, etc.

So you were no help at all.

Hope it helped azul.

Of course he was helpful... he was stating the max/usual rates.

If you start talking about contention ratio's etc then of course the speed is going to dip...

Well, I've had experience of both too, on NTL cable from a decent server I very, very rarely get less than 115k/sec, sustained, on a 1mbit line. When I had 512k, 72k/sec was about normal - anything below these was almost always the fault of the server, or me forgetting about a P2P client.

Damn crappy adsl contention :p
