The official chat client is far too susceptible to people spamming you up with hundreds of PMs of crap when they get annoyed at anything.
I use this thingy called Y!mLite ([URL]http://www.ymlite.co.uk/[/URL]) that does the job fine and blocks that kind of crap. Half the time I have PMs off.
I only use Yahoo for winding people up in chat rooms, y'see. Because I can block PMs and autoreply, anyone who spams me up gets a reply to each and every one of their spammy messages. Fools.
