Giancarlo Fisichella takes a much needed win for Jordan, his 2nd career win. It wasn't a great race for those looking for a Championship challenge as Baumgartner took 2nd place to take the Championship lead by 6 points.
The first half of the race, it seemed like no one wanted the lead. Fisichella got off the line well and held the lead but got under intense pressure from Pantano and Salo.
Meanwhile, Frentzen and Montoya both had spins and Coulthard retired on lap 12 with transmission problems. The lead battle was heating up and Pantano pushed too far and spun. That released Salo to challenge Fisichella. He challenged too hard and punted Fisichella off while he took the lead. Fisichella was still in touch in 6th.
Panis, Pizzonia, De La Rosa, Bruni, M Schumacher, Frentzen and Firman all made mistakes during the race. The two biggest mistakes were by the Williams drivers Montoya and Ralf Schumacher. Montoya went flying into the tyre barrier on lap 15 to retire and Ralf did a similar thing 6 laps later on lap 21 to retire.
The lead battle was still intense as Salo went in the pits. Villeneuve had the lead but he through it off the track. Fisichella somehow managed to get into the lead again after the first stops and wasn't in any trouble as he took victory.
It was heartbreak for Firman as Salo got involved in yet another incident. Firman was running a comfortable 3rd when Salo ran off the track in front of him and came back on to push Firman off the track and end his hopes of breaking his points duck. Salo eventually got what he deserved when he spun late on, ending his charge.
Fisichella gives himself and Jordan a glimmer of hope of winning the Championships again with a win in France, the 10th different winner out of 10 races. Baumgartner was the only one in the later stages to put a bit of pressure on Fisichella but took 2nd. Villeneuve keeps the Ferrari dream season going with 3rd. Barrichello continues his consistent finishing with 4th. Verstappen gives Minardi points to take them top of the Constructors with 5th. Raikkonen takes 6th with a meteoric drive from 20th. Pizzonia gives Renault a double points finish with 7th and Button picks up one point for 8th.
