Surely it can't be as simple as drag, drop & burn? Can it?
Also, if any specialist software is required, please recommend the best - free if possible - program to use.
Thanks

I would as I have tried it on mine and using the sound from the AVI sometimes messes the sync up and it takes longer to encode. Takes less than a minute to extract the sound, and the encode can be quite alot less, so I would say its worth it. Also if the AVI is 2 CDs i.e 1400mb then check to see if the sound is AC3 as this needs extra work to convert the sound so it will appear 5.1 on the DVD. If the AVI is the normal 700mb then the sound would be MP3 in which you convert normally.

Like you would pay for it anyway you dirty pikey.

This man speaks the truth, TMPGEnc is your god, use that to change the AVI file to an MPEG2, you dont need to bother with virtual dub, if you select the AVI file in the video input in TMPGEnc it will automatically select the same file to retrieve the sound from.
Then you need to author the MPEG2 file, i use TMPGEnc DVD Author, its really simple to use and it allows you to create simple yet functional menus on your dvd. After the file has been authored you then just burn it to dvd, i think TMPGEnc DVD Author has a burn function built in, but in my experience it doesnt work. So i just use nero, select the files that TMPGEnc DVD Author outputted, and put those into the VIDEO_TS folder in nero.
TMPGEnc is a good piece of software to convert AVI. You also need something like VirtualDub to rip the sound into WAV and use that as the source sound when converting.
