What do I do/need to burn an AVI file onto a DVD so it's playable in a normal DVD Player?

Surely it can't be as simple as drag, drop & burn? Can it?

Also, if any specialist software is required, please recommend the best - free if possible - program to use.

Thanks

You also need to check the sound. If its MP3 then your ok, if its 5.1 AC3 then you need to convert the sound as Ulead wont pick it up. Also Ulead is not brilliant at encoding things, you should really try and use TMPGEnc but as you said that doesnt work then Ulead might be best for you to use. There are other tools such as CCE to encode video you should really go to http://www.videohelp.com to read up one everything is there can be alot to learn.

So if I use the GSpot program to identify the PAL/NTSC side of it, then use the Ulead one to convert it correctly and burn it, all should be good?

I'll give it a try once home :)

Get GSpot as this will tell you want the AVI is in terms of audio, fps(PAL 25fps, NTSC 23.97fps or 29.97fps), video. Another program to try is Ulead Movie Factory(trial available) as this will convert the movie to DVD and burn it. Again make sure you set the preferences to PAL or NTSC.

Could it be something to do with PAL/NTSC differences? There was no way of checking so I went with PAL...

Hello all, back again.

Well, the file I need to burn is an AVI, obviously, but TGMPEnc wouldn't recognise it - neither would Virualdub.

I downloaded a trial of a program called DVDSanta - which converted everything for me and created the audio_TS and video_TS folders (is that their names?).

Anyway, I did a test write, and it was successful - however, when I went to write properly, I got an error just over half way through. the error message was all scrambled gibberish, then another came up saying something like 'data write fail' and it proceeded to spit my disc out, now unusable.

Any ideas what went wrong? I bloody hate it when things 'test' perfectly then screw up in the real thing. It's pathetic.

Also, I checked the _TS folders and there was nothing in the audio one - everything seemed to be in the video one :S

Help would be greatly appreciated!!

Try it with extracted audio as you might be suprised that it takes less time to encode.

It is sort of free, you can only convert so many things to MPEG2 though.
