Just put this in the XBox forum, didn't know if that was the right place for it, so I'm gonna put it here too.

I have recently got a new PC and installed Windows XP pro on it, but I still need to activate the damn thing, now that would all be fine and dandy, but the only problem is that I have a *ahem* backuped version of it. Now I know that my friend has already registered his CD key and that is the same one that I am using.

When I try and activate it over the internet it says it is unable to connect, and I don't really want to phone up some Micro$hite twit so has anyone got any ideas of how to activate it?

Strange. I have installed over 400 computers with XP Pro and have never had to get it activated from Microsoft. Just put the CD Key in during installation and that’s it. It asks if you want to register with Microsoft but you don’t have to, your computer will continue to work as will windows update.

You must have the corporate edition. The retail edition of XP Pro most certainly needs activating.

To the original poster: if you try to use the same CD key as your friend, you are going to screw him over. When you activate with his CD key, Microsoft will record your system metrics (i.e. what motherboard, processor, hard disk etc) over his, and next time he tries to connect to Windows Update with his own metrics the connection will be refused.
