Right, get this:

You are a helicopter pilot looking for survivors after torrential downpours caused a dam to burst, flooding an entire town in the valley below. As the weather gets worse your helicopter is forced down, but crahses beyond repair. The only thing that works is the radio, where you make your final contact with the rescue services before it shorts out - you have 30 hours to survive before the weather clears and another helicopter can rescue you. That defines the boundaries of the game - a free-roaming, flooded town in a valley with no escape, 30 hours until you can be rescued. It plays in real-time, guaranteeing you over a day of actual play.

During this time you have to survive not only the elements, but gangs of looters that have sprung up amongst the survivors of the flood. These are found in various areas of the flooded town, and often impede your survival as they try to steal any food, equipment, items you may have collected in your rucksack. The rucksack is important to the game dynamic, as it holds everything you have to survive. Only a certain amount of food can be collected, which runs down as time elapses, and only 2 guns at any one time. If you fall in the water you sink unless you press the 'release' button, causing you to survive drowning, but lose all your items and having to collect them again.

You navigate the flooded town using any boats or rafts you may find, but you can also jump between roofs (if possible, otherwise you fall!), or by using a grappling hook or telegraph poles. Some buildings suffer from structural damage, so only a certain amount of time can be spent on them until they collapse. The flood rises, causing areas of the town to become inaccessible, unless you have a boat. Boat types range from canoes to police boats, but can be stopped and sunk by shooting the engine and hull respectively.

And here's the genius bit: you can get hypothermia. Staying in the rain too long will cause your body temperature to fall, and your clothes to get wet. Being wet for too long will cause permanent damage that you cannot recover from. You have to find or start a fire, or a change of clothes to get dry. Simple, yet important to the game.

The gangs range from "Lug-heads" that hang out by the bowling alley. They are all athletic and come from hunting backgrounds, but can be fooled easily. "The God-Boys" shelter in the flooded Church, but aren't particularly Christian - they'll kill for food. Not the strongest gang, but are clever enough to use stealth to kill you and steal your items. "The Mallrats" hang out at the flooded mall. Largest group in numbers, and have leaders (these can be killed to send the rest of the gang fleeing), but have heavy weapons due to the ammo shop being at the mall! All gangs have limited members, but enough to ensure a good slug and firefight until either them or you are dead.

Some of the locations are as follows:

The Mall:
Big, open area, with lots of small areas off the sides for gangs to hide. Not much cover. Finding the security room will let you see where gangs are on CCTV, so you can avoid, or tackle head-on. The guns n' ammo shop is located here, so you may have to keep returning to stock up on bullets.

Bowling Alley:
Large windows allow for sniping gang members from outside, but should they find you, you'll be in big trouble as they're experienced hunters. Only place with a working radio, so that you can find out how long until more helicopters arrive.

The Church:
Dark environments mean stealth is essential if you wish to enter here. Plenty of food, but it's well guarded.

Flooded Town:
Not much remain of the houses except their roofs. Boats can use the roofs as ramps, or you can get out and jump between varying heights of building, finding good sniping points, or access to dry clothes. Surviving angry residents may mistake you for a looter though, so be on your guard.

No snappy name or characters yet, but I think the premise is pretty good and unique. It keeps you on your toes, making you continually move or you die.

If you're trying to make a realistic game there's a few points you need to address.

Only carrying two guns is not realistic, I could easily carry about 7. Of course that would leave very little room for anything else, and I'd have to let go of a few of them to actually fire one.

Likewise I can easily swim whilst carrying many items.

What you really need is to develop a proper item carrying system. Some games (like RE) have space blocks, others (Diablo II) use weight.

You need to combine both. Then you'd have presets for things like weight allowance in swimming, carrying too much will make it harder, more draining and carrying more will cause sinkage. If you really want to get advanced, some items would actually aid bouyoncy, like a large backpack you could hold onto and kick.

Also some items would cease to function or lose effectivness after being submerged.

The actual concept of the real playing game sounds great though. But trying to have an actual set amount of people would be very hard to do, can you really have so many people there that you couldn't kill them all in the first 10 hours without making it totally unrealistic?

Muuuh, it's a flood. That totally changes the game and makes it just like MGS3. Be ashamed.

Maybe the helicopter was traveling over a country with no trespassing. It is a terrorists area and they are coming to hunt you down. You must survive by stealth, hiding behing trees and under little wooden bridges.

It's like a very big forest and you must survive like you said by food and stuff, and you must wait for backup to arrive. You can kill the enemy, but you must not give others a clue where you are. You can't stay in one place, because there area is being well petrolled.

After the alloted time is up and the allies arrive, you then attack all of the enemy taking prisoners or killing them.

Forget Zombies, it's been done. The intro sequence should show the town getting flooded and briefly show a zoo. A twist part way through the game could be that a shark has got out of the tank and now inhabits the water but it only appears occasionaly. You could have areas blocked off because the shark is in the way or something.

Anyway, it sounds like a really good idea. What was snugglys?

There's a giant squid in Resi 4 isn't there? Well, something big that lives in water.

As soon as I read the stranded-in-a-town-bit, I thought of Resi.

And Zombies.

And then Mikelar talks of giant squid........Resi sharks.

Cracking game that is.
