I don't know what it is about old games, but they have a certain personality about them which attracts me to them. I found this some time ago, while still trying to write letters on this site I lost my way to a SNES rom site and downloaded a few of my old games which don't work anymore, I also love Micromachines on the megadrive as it's a really fun, don't ask me which one it was, it's a four player and you can make your own tracks.
Anyway, I was with a mate thismorning and she started playing snakes on her Nokia mobile phone, it's so basic but so addictive. This lead me to the topic, do we really like all the fancy graphics or would we rather pay 99% less for a game which keeps us entertained for ages but looks like it was made with a pen and paper?

My point about a commercial venture is that most games are created by companies, not by individuals. Shareware is usually a way of individuals getting their games popular.

When I mentioned jeff minter, I meant if he started around know he might not have been as successful.

I think tetris was important. I suppose it wasn't the first of its kind, but it probably launched the game boy, which in itself is good to pass the time for short periods.

I would say that by casual gamers I meant people who don't want to spend ages getting into games, but those who want to play if they've got half an hour free. Most gamers now are the sort where you play and then save and start where you saved. This is not quite as satisfying if you don't want to spend that long on the game.

A lot of games now are the sort that you need to commit quite a bit of time in to get into. The minimalisic game is perfect for that sort of gamer, as it usually doesn't take long to figure out what to do. The puzzle game is the usually form of this. I was using a more resticted definition of casual gamer.

For example, my mum used to play tetris quite a bit, and used to be much better at it than me, gbut didn't play on other games very much. My dad used to play puzzle bubble quite often as well. Neither played other games very much.

I personally like games like that if I've got a bit of spare time. My favourite at the moment is Crazy Bus, which I got free from www.freeloader.com. I don't play that often, but it's good if I haven't got long to play.

For the past 10 years or so ALL none freeware games are created for the comercial venture... even shareware titles are made in the attempt of a profit...

I doubt that jeff minter would

Pong/Frogger/etc.. are still being made... so Llamatron would have probably gotten a PC release or two? ... Especially given his history.. theres bound to be more than a few people willing to pay a tenner for the updates...

Tetris probably started this,

Puzzel games were popular throughout the eighties... Tetirs didnt really come onto the scene until '88+

Also they are probably more

I'd have tought 99 percent of console games were written with these gamers in mind?

I think it partly that games are created as a commercial venture, not by individuals with an idea. I doubt that jeff minter would have been able get his games created now.

The ideas he had for games such as llamatron, revenge of the killer camels, and other games like that would probably not get into commercial production. However, shareware could let this still happen.

However, we still have puzzle games, that have the same essential simplicity, but can be quite hard to master.

Tetris probably started this, and games such as puzzle bubble have a similar approach.

Sometimes it is these simple ideas that produce very entertaining games. I don't thing the lastability works in the same way as for the other sorts of games, as the simple games don't lend themselves to playing for hours and hours of constant play, but may be good to dip into regularly.

Also they are probably more suitable for casual gamers who do not want to dedicate a lot of time to games, or have a busy schedule.

Sorry, but the American version doesn't come out to June (same as us) so he must have a JAP version.
