So, I need a contingency plan; a plan to buy a new flat-screen monitor in case my current one does die.
I’m looking to spend around £250-£300 on a flat-screen 17-inch monitor, so what do people recommend? Which makes are the best/worst? What features should a buyer be looking for in deciding which monitor to buy (Contrast Ratio, Brightness, Response time etc) and where should I look (ebuyer?)?
I may not be purchasing in the very near future, but you never know when a piece of equipment could die I suppose, and I don’t really know which are best/worst makes and models, so naturally would appreciate any advice, as I wouldn’t want to balls up a purchase by buying some shoddy piece of crud. Cheers.

No, we occasionally have that happen with the speakers, where a phone signal will make them make a little noise before getting a phone call. These monitor pulses just happen every so often, the screen will go slightly dark for a split second before returning to normal. The monitor is well passed it's guarantee and it's had a good innings, so rather than waiting for it to die, we took the initiative and just got a new one.
Nice monitor though. But I'm sticking with my CRT for now.
I was going to wait a bit, but my financial parnter (my bro) and I decided to just say "to hell with it, we'll buy it now". So we did.
It'll hopefully be arriving soon, and I'll be into the modern 21st century world of flat-screen monitor goodness.

It is virtually impossible to get the herc TFT's now. Look around for the LG L1710B, if you get it second hand then it should be in your price range, the image quality is great and there is no evidence of ghosting in UT2004.
EDIT: Well, it seems you have already taken a fancy to what i recommend, and ebuyer even sell it in your price range. I can't believe they sell it so cheap.
This one looks kinda interesting too: http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=723273742&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=43564
The downside of TFT monitors is that they have a max resolution of 1280*1024 unless you get something obscenely large or expensive!
