"Monitor help."

I’ve had my regular boring old 17-inch CRT monitor for quite a few years now. It has served me very well in that time, but it's getting on a bit and I’m getting the feeling that the time will come when it will die (every so often the screen “pulses” ever so slightly, a sign that it could perhaps be on the way out).

So, I need a contingency plan; a plan to buy a new flat-screen monitor in case my current one does die.
I’m looking to spend around £250-£300 on a flat-screen 17-inch monitor, so what do people recommend? Which makes are the best/worst? What features should a buyer be looking for in deciding which monitor to buy (Contrast Ratio, Brightness, Response time etc) and where should I look (ebuyer?)?

I may not be purchasing in the very near future, but you never know when a piece of equipment could die I suppose, and I don’t really know which are best/worst makes and models, so naturally would appreciate any advice, as I wouldn’t want to balls up a purchase by buying some shoddy piece of crud. Cheers.

Apparently the profit margins were becoming too slim for the company in all other areas bar sound cards.

Wow. Do you know why? Cos their hardware was absolutely top notch stuff and really wasnt badly priced!

Quite a while ago now, of course they didnt recall any of their hardware products so some stores still have old stock.

LG1701B all the way. Excellent TFT, I have 2 of them. In fact I should be on commission from LG as I've sold this model to 8 people I work with.

Hercules has ceased production of all hardware except for sound cards.

Yeh, not many places seem to sell them. When I got mine, I bought it from Special Reserve but they've since stopped selling them. Any idea why nobody stocks them? They're fantastic screens.

You will be very pleased with that monitor, it's absolutely gorgeous.
