The other day I stumbled across one of the funniest, most original animated series I've seen in years. It's called Invader Zim and it's on Nick Toons TV and 9pm every night. Don't be put off by the channel it's on, seriously this is some quite dark stuff. In last nights episode Zim stalked around the school in the shadows stealing organs from other students and staff. In fact it's so far away from your average Nickelodeon cartoon that it was cancelled during it's second series (it had already been stopped twice before but came back because of high demand). No morals, no hidden lessons, no annoying perfect kids, just a damn entertaining cartoon. It's cynical, clever, dark, funny and more for adults than kids.

The basic plot is this (taken from http://www.tvtome.com/InvaderZIM/):

Invader ZIM is an eccentric alien soldier from the planet Irk. He was banished from the Irken Empire after nearly destroying his home planet on an early mission. After begging his superiors, the Almighty Tallest Red and Purple, for another chance, they decide to get rid of him once and for all. They trick him into going on a "secret mission" to an obscure planet at the edge of the universe, a planet with the unlikely name of Earth, in hopes that he'll die along the way. But their trick backfires when ZIM safely reaches Earth and begins his ever-so-subtle conquest of it. He disguises himself as a schoolboy, and now the only person who can stop him is one kid - Dib, a somewhat insane paranormal researcher, who sees straight through ZIM's disguise and is intent on stopping his reign of "terror". The only problem is that neither of them is very good at stopping the other.

I'm sure some of you would have watched it before. It's been on for quite a while now, but at about 7am on weekends so I've only just discovered it. There's a Region 1 DVD that I think I may have to buy.

Anyway check it out and see what you think.

I haven't seen that, but it does sound kinda cool so I'll have a look for it when I get the chance.

I really, REALLY want to be able to read comics like that.

But the Beano is the only one in my price range.

I know that Roman Dirge was also invlolved in some of the character design for the show. He's great, especially the Lenore books. She's a cute little dead girl whose adventures consist of things like repeatedly plunging 8" blades into her ex-boyfriend's head. In a really sweet way. Fun for all the family!
