Q - Is it easy to mod Samsung DVD drives. I mean, is it worth it rather than buying a straight-swap Xbox drive?
I opened up the Xbox (a little tricky but fine) and popped out the rubbish Thomson drive. Screwed the Phillips one in, but, not as it appeared, well enough as the screws were loose and rattled once I put it back together. So I took it apart again and screwed it in tight - could they have caused any damage at all?
I turned it on. Xbox logo intro fine, until the end where it went 'bleeeuur' (at the end of the jingle) and went to the 'You need customer support' screen. The DVD drive worked fine, but there WAS a red light flashing around the DVD open/close button - which suggests the drive is the problem. Whih would really annoy me. Any common mistakes people make that I might of done?
I'm going to put the Thomson back in and see if it works.
Oh dear...
Xbox Scene should tell you - somewhere :)
I don't really care that much anyway...

Yup. I managed to get on the race, but as soon as I retired - bam. Crashed.
It seems to not like the end of races on Rallisport or PGR2. Ninja Gaiden just doesn't work.
follow that guide to succesfully open the unit.
***NOTE***
Whatever you do, DO NOT disconnect the HDD - leave all HDD cables connected and just move it to the side. There's a risk the HDD could become unlocked and you can't lock it unless it's chipped.
If you need any more help, just ask me. I've done it before.
