Is it instantly noticeable if you are running DDR Ram when playing games? i.e is there such a big performance difference between running two sticks of 512mb 3200 compared to 2 x 256 3200 and 1 stick of 512mb 3200?

Named examples or instances of massive differences would be appreciated.

Cheers!

Yeah cheers, might wait for DDR2 now which isn't far off, I can grab a new Hard Drive and look into a new processor but I will wait with the RAM situation.

With regards to a new Hard Drive, would something like this be worth it http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=122429&cks=PRL ? How does Serial ATA work, what sort of connection to the motherboard etc...

Cheers.

DDR only works with matched pairs, ie, same brand, cl, size etc. Some processors, esp the FX51 require matched registered pairs to work (thank god they ditched this in the fx53!)

My nForce 2 mobo came with 2x256 in normal, switch it to Dual Chan and the difference is amazing.

I doubt that. I just watched a process rendering 10,000 pixel wide screenshots that crept over 2GB RAM usage eventually, and I doubt you do that regularly at home.

It will be marginal at best. The hard disk, on the other hand, you will notice right away.

You wanna go for Geil Golden Dragon Memory cos it rules! A lot of reviews suggest it's some of the fastest/most reliable memory around, and it looks soooo cool! It's transparent! And gold!

Basically at the moment I have 1 x 256mb Samsung PC2700, 1 X 256mb Unbranded PC3200 and 1 X 512mb Unbranded PC 2700 in. This is running with a 2600 XP + with an FSB of 177mhz which as you can imagine causes instability and very random crashes due to the slower sticks of RAM struggling to run faster than 166mhz. This is with a latency of 2.5 which is what the slowest stick runs at.

I was looking at getting 2 sticks of DDR 400 512mb Corsair RAM Latency 2 and a new NF-7 mobo, both for around £250. This way I could clock at around 200mhz FSB with my 8 fans for my CPU.

In this instance; taking into consideration my current memory setup (new Hard Drive as well, 10,000 RPM with 8mb cache compared to my current 512k cache 7200 RPM) would the differences be noticeable or would I be wasting my time?

Cheers.

Some motherboards will run 3 sticks of RAM in dual channel if 2 of the sticks have a summed capacity equal to the other stick. In other words 2x 256 MB sticks would run in one channel and 1x 512 MB stick in the other.

Really though, you won't notice that much of a difference.

Having faster RAM is very noticable to me, although I find that MORE ram is usually the answer.

Note that in modern nForce 2 motherboards, 2x256mb DDR will run faster than 1x512mb DDR.

Also, if you run some DDR400 RAM with DDR333 at the same time, both will run at DDR333.

I know the advantages of RAM and all that.

I am talking about the same size of RAM (1GB) and the differences between DDR 400 running in Dual Channel mode and 3 sticks of PC3200 also with a capacity of 1GB and how this effects game performance due to the extra bandwidth.
