Aye, but the PC market is held, at heart, by custom PC builders. Now, if only we could build custom Consoles... PS2 with GBA port? No problem :D.
However, one thing that's more likely to happen is a Universal online play system, something like CentralStation or Xbox Live!, only for all the next generation consoles, which'll allow you to play against your mate wether or not he's using the same console as you. Cunning, non?

It'll never happen completely, the clostest you'll get to it would be the equivalent of the pc market, one company dominates and maybe a couple of smaller companies lagging behind. Do you really want that when they could do what they want without any fear of alienating their buyers, they'll never team up, shared responsibilities means shared profits.
but be thankfull, we all get to play Sega games now!!!
Sony would want to make cheap parts, Microsoft would want to charge fee's while Nintendo would rarther be out of business.
What seemed the most likely thing that was ever to happen would of been different consols that played the same media, like vcr or dvd players.
Howevor now i could see the most likely thing being online consolse which you download the same games for, howevor you would still get exclusives, and for multi-format games you would have to select the right box, like operating systems when downloading software from the internet.

One console in the market means no competition and no competition means they can charge whatever they think they can get away with.
Physically it would be huge.
