In the thick of all the gaming world, what makes up are minds about what we buy and how much we spend, two of the biggest factors I feel are hype and reviews.

Reviews now:

Reviews can be harmful, NOM gave 96% for Donkey Kong on the N64, when this game probably only deserved a potty and some baby wipes. Too many official gaming magazines are out, I didn't think that there are that many companies for these mags. I reckon most of us in this Forum don't listen to reviews or even read them, you probably have a look at the score, make a comment and then if you feel you will like the game you will buy it. I know I don't rely on reviews as much as I used to when I was twelve years old. One of the great things about somewhere like SR is that they don't give the reviews a mark, they just let you know what that reviewer thinks, if you then want another opinion you go and check what gamers say on the game online. What I suggest is before you start complaining about how rubbish the game you just brought, it maybe you should have hired it first...

Firstly hype:

What can you say about this little four letter word? HYPE

Hype is everywhere, from trainers to films and consoles to games, in my opinion hype is bad, is can damage a great game, people talk wonders about this game and say it will be simply superb, they haven't probably even played it and are going on what they have seen or read from that paricular gaming company

A great example of this was 'Perfect Dark' on the N64, a whole year and a half before it was finished people were calling it the Goldeneye beater and the best shooter ever, this was a whole year and a half before the game was even complete, RARE being the great company that they are didn't want to release it knowing people might be disapointed, so they held it back 4 months and then another 2 months, they wanted too tweak the game and try to perfect it in every department, this was a good idea at first but as you had the complainers you had the other half of the waiters who grew more hype around the game which made it sound like the best game ever ever ever (Ms Jackson hehehe).

When RARE did release the game the people who originally hyped it then started the 'not as good as Goldeneye' thing, but then again I don't think RARE were trying to beat Goldeneye, they made Goldeneye so they wouldn't want to make it look rubbish, Perfect Dark (PD) did sell in it millions worldwide, but there was still the fact that hype had damaged a really great game, no one can say they didn't think the game was good, infact I personally though PD was brilliant and the multiplayer was much better then other games.

There are so many examples of this what I will call 'damaging' hype. MGS2 has probably been the most anticipated game EVER, but then again I read somewhere that the makers were struggling to keep the story line up to full brilliance, again this game will be delayed because Konami don't want to release a game with the first part being 100% and the ending being 70%. They are struggling to beat the original and I find it hard for them to do this, sure the graphics will be better, I just hope it doesn't fail in other departments, hopefully konami will take there time and release a 98% quality game.

The problem is no matter how much I protest against hype it will always be with us making decisions on what we buy.

Thanks for reading

Thanks SHEEPY! :)

Also the best magazine Japanese magazine has only given 40/40 on one game, although I can't remember what the second was I know the first was Zelda:OFT, if you compare with them giving MGS only 34/40 you can see why so many Japanese people brought it!

The idea in business being to beat the opposition, I don't think PS2 will mind taking the blame.

At least Sega have the right attitude!

If you can't beat 'em join em!
