I didn't really like it either, it wasn't really related to the games. However I think there's another Final Fantasy movie being made just now, that's based around the actual games this time.

Spirits Within is just a chance for them to show off their computer graphics ability. Plot had nothing to do with Final Fantasy and shouldn't have even carried the name. Just like a page 3 model, nice to look at but absolutely no substance
