The world of online gaming has been around for sometime and I personally really enjoy playing them so I have decided to write about them. Here are my views and recommendations on certain aspects of online games.
Types Of Multiplayer Games
Strategy: Strategy games are one of my personal favourites. This is because it isn’t just a game where you run around a little arena and shoot anything in your way. Strategy games require skill, tactics and quick thinking. In many strategy games you start with the same basic buildings, villagers and some resources. You usually start with a Town Centre where you able to create the lowest life forms, although these are the people who keep your civilisation running successfully, a few villagers or peons and just enough resources to build very primitive buildings such as a mill or storehouse. From these basic resources, you are able to create an empire of great magnitude. This is a type of game that even if you have a higher score that your opponent, you could still loose. One of the most important factors in strategy games is your choice of weapons. For example, in Age Of Empires 2, if you were to create an army of knights, you would think you would have a pretty good chance; you have only if your opponent has not built pike men. This is because in strategy games, things such as “attack bonuses” exist. This is the most important factor that makes this type of game a game of wits, your choice of army can win or loose you the war.
Games I would recommend in the genre: Age Of Empires 2, Cossacks: European Wars and Fate Of the Dragon.
3D Shooters: Now, this type of game is the basic “seek and destroy” game. This, in my opinion, is the most action packed type of game there is. Although there is no story line to it, you will find there is no storyline to any online games apart from RPG’s and to a lesser extent strategy games. I think that 3D shooters do not require a storyline because they are all about action and fragging. These work remarkably well if you want to release anger or are very frustrated. There is nothing better than going online and kickin’ butt! The most important game in the evolution of the online 3D shooters is probably Quake 2. This is because the graphics were good but the playability was even better and it lured many people onto the 3D shooter scene and to this day, even though better games are available, lots of people still choose to play this game due to the actual playability of it. During the past couple of years, 3D shooters have become more graphics orientated and are very impressive. With the same or even better playability as Quake 2 but with graphics that you would only expect to see in a cut-scene from a Final Fantasy game, this has made the present 3D shooters extremely enjoyable to play.
Games I would recommend in this genre: Kingpin: Life Of Crime, Quake 2, Unreal Tournament and Quake 3.
Flight sims: Flight sims, in my opinion, are only worth playing if they are combat. There is nothing like a good dogfight against a real person. The reason for this is because no computer can exactly mimic the actual human player, if he will come at you with all guns blazing or if he will try a sneaky approach. Fantastic graphics also come into play with this genre making the game nice on the eyes as well as high-quality gameplay.
Games I would recommend in this genre: Crimson Skies and Combat Flight Simulator
Sports Games: Sports games haven’t really taken off in the world of multiplayer mainly due to that horrible thing known as lag. In some games, lag is not really a big problem but imagine a game like ISS, you are just putting the power bar up for a shot and then it just pauses. How frustrating would that be? I know because when I give one of my brothers a two player and the phone goes and one of them pauses it, it is very, very annoying. As soon as the lag factor has been taken care of, I am sure that sports games will take off and be one of the most played games in the multiplayer world.
Games I would recommend in this genre: At this moment in time, there are no games in this genre that I would recommend.
RPG’s: RPG’s have always been popular with gamers, although the genre really exploded with the release of Final Fantasy 7 on the psx. Ever since this release, developers have been going one step further every time a new game is released and now we can even play and interact with other people online. I think the first game to do this was Diablo. This is one of my favourite games online because every time you played it, your character was still the same and you had all the items you had collected on your travels, but the levels were never the same. This is very important because the last ability is immense. I still enjoy playing on this game because it is still a real challenge to find your way through the dungeon and find Diablo. RPG’s can be great fun online, but can also be a real bore, choose wisely the game you wish to play on and if you choose correctly, you won’t regret it.

These are the main genres that incorporate online gaming. Out of all of them, my two favourite genres are strategy and 3D shooters. Although these two types of games are completely different, they both include elements that, in my opinion, make a game enjoyable to play. The thing that I enjoy the most about strategy games is the fact that you and your opponents start with the same number of men, buildings and resources so there is no excuse if you win or lose apart from you were the better or worse player. Knowledge and experience are also important factors if you are to be successful or not.
The most important factor that I enjoy when I play 3D shooters is the fact that it is a laugh. If you are playing with a friend or someone on the other side of the world, you are still able to have an enjoyable time playing. You will find that 3D shooters are not enjoyable on very rare occasions.
