Yes: I'm ill. I'm dying. Or at least it feels like I am.

I like to pride myself on my immune system: I never take tablets of any kind - Anadin, paracetamol, Neurofen etc. - and I make sure I get regular intakes of various vitamins and I drink one of those Actimal/Yakult/Müller pro-biotic things each day. It works for me and keeps colds and things at bay. Or so I thought.

On Tuesday - due to a bad series of events including a blazing row with the ex-missus/carer, my mum being in a decidedly annoying mood and my auntie's computer being a complete beech - I hardly had anything to eat (a pasty and a BoostTM) or drink (a single cup of coffee). By the end of the day I was feeling low, tired and depressed.

So, when I woke on Wednesday morning I discovered I had the mother-of-all sore throats - usually the first sign on any oncoming illness - so I spend most of the day making up for what I didn't do the day before: drinking plenty and eating healthily. But ... it was too late.

The sore throat got worse and, because I couldn't partake of my usual pain relief methods (!), all my aches and pains were amplified - my back ached, my arms ached and my legs ached. If Death had knocked on my front door I'd have let him in, sat him down, made him a drink and then let him have his way.

I felt marginally better this morning, but by midday it was painfully clear that it was just a lull in the onslaught - later this afternoon saw me having a headache of all things (a rare occurence).

I have discovered that one of the best ways to soothe a sore throat is freezing cold water; unfortunately, combined with the overdose of vitamin C, this has the knock-on of causing more trips to the toilet than usual, and therefore more physical effort and more aches.

Still, it could be worse. Actually, no: it couldn't.
