ff, I find it strange you have failed to mention that it's Christian Aid week this week, considering you are a Christian and all..........

It is really, just giving back a little of what God has given to us. So if you like it is our small present/offering to God. A good charity or organisation may also use the money to do the Lord's work by evangelism or just helping the poor.
> Hmm? Scriptually, year-round giving is desired.
*shrugs* I'm not Christian therefore I'm not required to give away a tenth of my earnings. I pay enough in taxes to the government, but if once in a while I *want to* give to charity I'll do it.
[edit] and if its desired scriptually, and you are not a good christian if you choose not to give money away secretly as a good deed in the eyes of god, does that make it a god tax?

You give a tenth of what you earn? All year round?

> So, ff, what do you give all year round?
Tithe.
