The only thing I can think of, which has worked for me, is to dial into the router. What brand is it? Different brands may work differently. I have a Netgear DG834G. I just open my browser and type in '192.168.0.1', enter my username and password and test/reboot the connection from there.
If you don't have a Netgear router and the above doesn't work for you, I'm afraid I won't be able to help any more.
p.s. My router is a modem/router/switch combo - which could make things different from the setup of a normal router.
