Have been thinking about buying one of these for a while, not really got the money for one but with my birthday comming up soon I might be able to get some money together then hopefully get a job before my holiday for some more cash towards one.

Anyway I don't really know much about them and thought maybe someone on here would have one or know a bit about them.

So....

What kind of things should I be looking at?

Just want something for taking on holidays or when I'm going places, birthday parties, events etc.
Not looking for amazing picture quality or anything like that, just something that will suit my needs. Not really wanting to spend a lot on one but not really knowing much about them means I don't really know what kind of prices the decent enough ones start at.

Would appreciate any help from anyone.
Thanks

Thats the camera I have, as well as my Sony TRV14 miniDV cam. What I meant to say is that the memory stick cameras that aim at being a video recorder are usually cheap and have crap lenses etc. Basically £100-150 ones that arent any decent at anything. The DSC-P72 is aimed at being a camera first with the ability to have video as an extra. But the times you get isnt much and having the ability to take a few hours of video on holiday isnt a possibility.

My problem was I don't really know much about them so didn't know the main differences and also what prices the decent models come in at.
So miniDV cameras have tapes and you then copy the stuff from the cam tape through the cam to your computer?

Any idea how much a decent one costs?

So the memory card ones not really worth it unless you pay a lot for one?

I hvae a Sony Cyber Shot DSC-P72, which although it is a digital camera, it can record movies. They are alright quiality, and I can fit 5mins 54 secs on a 128MB stick with 640x480 res, which suits all I use it for.

You after a a miniDV camera or a memory card based one? miniDV uses tapes still but they are very small. You then would connect the camera to a Firewire port and then capture the footage in real time to the PC. miniDV is something like 25-30mb a second, basically a 60min tape can take up 12gb so alot bigger than a DVD so needs compressing.

The cameras that use memory cards store compressed footage and will look crap, especially cheap ones. Also to store alot of footage you need alot of memory cards.

I had looked at a few sony ones but wasn't really sure what to look for.

I think I need to look into them in a bit more detail to work out what features I should look for, size, memory etc.

I agree with taka-Q. Sony products are damn fine quality, but more expensive than competitors.

Samsung are really coming into their own these days though. Kep an eye on them - do they not do any DV Cams?
