I've just uploaded all the HTML files in my website which all have the extension '.shtml' because I use Server Side Includes to add common content (i.e. the links menu) but they've stopped working - what I mean is the files I've set to be included aren't being included. If you view the source you'll clearly see the code like ...

... which should by rights be replaced with the content of the file 'header.shtml'.

They were working immediately before I uploaded the HTML files which I did because I'd made a global Search & Replace change in all of them.

Can anyone shed any light on what's gone on, please?

It's in the pipeline - I can only learn one thing at a time.

I didn't realise there was an alternative ... I shall look into that.

Cheers. I wanted it to be a simple layout and I've done lots of research to find one I liked. CSS gets better the more I use it!

FWIW, shtml is so redundant it hurts to see someone using it. Secondly, I'd recommend using PHP instead purley as it's more secure than shtml. And finally, virtual sucks for includes, file is better as it has more flexibility, though, again, PHP or ASP is a better approach that shtml.

BTW, looking good. Excellent code and CSS coming on there.

It's the first problem I've had with them and they were quick to respond, so I'll let them off this time.

Woohoo!

I sent an email to the support address and just got back:-

"Sorry about that, we were using an old FreeBSD 5 SSI module that was crashing Apache. Is everything working for you now?"

And it works!

Cheers for your help, guys.

Yep - it was working perfectly moments before I re-uploaded all the HTML files.

Probably a silly suggestion, but your host does support SSI?

First I searched for h3> and replaced with h2> and then searched for h4> and replaced with h3>. I'd just changed the title (which used to be a

followed by a

) and it was purely for my anal retentive way of keeping things tidy.

Cheers, Jambeg. The error you're getting usually means the path and/or name is wrong in the 'insert' command, i.e. it can't find the file.
