After 6 months of messing about with it, I have decided that my PCMCIA card might be the problem. Such a pity. It only cost me £10.

So... if anyone has any first hand experience with these, then great. If not, any opininons on the best manufacturer would be appreciated.

Any others that I should consider? These are all fairly reasonably priced and from big name manufacturers as well. I know, 802.11g would be faster and better etc, but my router is only 802.11b. Besides, my broadband is only 512 Kbps, so that's the bottleneck on my network. Plus, 802.11g is more expensive.

oh yes :D it's quite funny how many people leave their networks open to attacks!

All my gear is Linksys (Cisco Systems)

Only on 802.11b but never had a problem with the hardware. The Card in my lappy is a WPC11 v.3 (£31.50) The router was only £40 (BEFW11S4).

I've ordered a Wireless access point and one of those Belkin cards, my mate has one and they are great, we've picked up a few networks after a little bit of "WarDriving" :D

I use the Netgear M521. Its set up in adhoc mode, I have found though that it is superb, as long as you use the provided software.

Nothing seems wrong with it, in fact, it looks to be the best free gift in a while. But a PCI card just might not be the PCMCIA wireless Cardbus thing that I was looking for.

Thanks for the input folks, I'll probably go for the Netgear one.

What's wrong with those free SR ones?

THey're free for a reason, but I'm yet to find it, it works perfectly for me...

All 3 of them are pretty decent and should do the job for you as far as PCMCIA cards are concerned.

We use the a lot of Netgear, D-Link and Belkin equipment at work and they work well.

I have the 'g' version of that Netgear card and it's fantastic. In fact, I'd always recommend Netgear products as they are so user friendly and reliable.

I've used that Netgear card for more than a year and it's been great. I had no problems with it at all in a Windows 98 machine and it was equally painless with XP. Can't say much more than that really.
